FISCAL FITNESS SAVES MORE THAN $279 MILLION THROUGH FY 2007

When Governor Carcieri first ran for office in 2002, he vowed to conduct a “Big Audit” of state government. As a private citizen and a former CEO, Carcieri knew that state government could be run more efficiently and more effectively. Once elected, the Governor immediately set to work to implement the “Big Audit.” Renamed Fiscal Fitness, a dedicated team of state employees was tasked with improving services and cutting costs.

Their work has paid off. More than $279 million in savings has been achieved thanks to the state’s Fiscal Fitness program on everything from health insurance contracts to pension reform. By 2010, operating state government will cost $500 million less thanks to these cost-savings measures.
