Meet the First Lady

first lady sue carcieriSuzanne “Sue” Carcieri was born in Cranston, Rhode Island and grew up in the city and in East Greenwich. The first of four children of Ivar and Patricia Owren, she attended East Greenwich High School where she was a class officer, a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. While a student at the high school, she met her future husband, Governor Don Carcieri.

Mrs. Carcieri earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Rhode Island, and a master’s degree in health education from Rhode Island College. She taught science to junior high school students at Our Lady of Mercy School in East Greenwich for four years. From 1981-1983, the Carcieris lived in Kingston, Jamaica, where the first lady taught science at the local school that her own children attended while Governor Carcieri directed the Catholic Relief Services’ West Indies operations.

Mrs. Carcieri has served on the boards of Rhode Island Catholic Social Services, Save the Bay, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Additionally, she and her husband are co-founders of the Academy Children's Science Center in East Greenwich.

The Carcieris have four children, Matthew, Alison, Jill and Sarah, and 14 grandchildren. Family visits with the grandchildren are an integral part of life in the Carcieri home.

In addition to her family, the First Lady has maintained a lifelong interest in music. She has served on the board of the Academy Players in East Greenwich and has participated in musicals there and with the North Kingstown Community Players.
